Laser engraving is growing marketplace and only takes a small investment to get going.

Whether you realize it or not, personalized and engraved products are everywhere and someone, somewhere is producing these amazing items and profiting, too.

What about the start up cost of a laser engraving service company? Very affordable! Because a complete laser engraving system that includes computer, software and supplies can be purchased reasonably.

Engrave with laser technology cigars, iPODS, Mac Books, acrylic, counter tops, wood, rubber, stone, leather, fabric or glass to make and personalize unique gift items, recognition awards or keepsakes. Personalize plaques, pens, pencils, or cases. Cut puzzles. Mark tools. Engrave tags. Even etch wine bottles. There are endless possibilities!

Today’s post is a clear example of the different uses of this amazing technology. Below you can see a laser engraving glass with rotary attachment. With the rotary attachment we can engrave most round objects.

Granite engraving is an art technique that has been around for many hundreds years, but with the appearance of the laser technology, granite laser engraving has become the latest application of many professional for many different purposes. Probably the most popular are memorials and gravestones.

Granite is one of the hardest surfaces, and so is perfect for an outdoor plaque, memorial or gravestone. And with laser technology, a photo of the deceased can be added to the gravestone or memorial simply and easily. Granite is usually black but can be found in a dark gray. Black is most often the color of choice, and many feel that the blacker the granite the better stone.

If your desire is engraving your own granite, it is important that you can control carefully your engraver or before buying one to make sure that the engraver you have will cut into granite. Many smaller table top machines do not have the power to etch in granite, so it’s important to check this important point carefully.

Nevertheless, there are many companies, both on the internet and in your neighborhood, who do have the ability to etch in granite. Because granite is heavy, check carefully into shipping costs before you buy—the cost of shipping alone may make it worth the effort to find a local shop who can create the laser engraving in granite that you wish. The newer machines can take a photograph or a piece of complicated art and etch it into the granite, to create a one of the kind, long lasting memorial, plaque or gravestone.

As the equivalent of tattoos for your gadgets, laser engraving manages to provoke the same love it/hate it response – some view it as an awesome act of self-expression and personalisation, while others see it as a permanent marring of a tech toy and something guaranteed to kill resale values. Still, if you’re a true geek you’ll love the idea of a laser so feast your eyes on this Laser’s video demo of one of their team’s iPhones going under the demon lens.

Of course, they’re not doing this for proverbials and giggles; they’d like very much for you to splash out $10k on one of their engraving machines. Now, assuming you’re not planning to engrave every single solitary item you own (plus those belonging to other people) it’s likely cheaper to go somewhere that already has an engraving machine and get them to do it as a one-off, but who cares. I just like seeing an iPhone undergo laser surgery.

The traditional raw rubber used for vulcanizing stamp dies is quite unacceptable for the production of laser stamp dies, the laser process requires a very even thickness and blemish free surface to produce an acceptable printed image from a stamp die. The rubber must also be subjected to a specific curing process before it can be exposed to the elevated temperature of a laser beam.

The depth of the engraving is determined by the laser speed, its wattage and the density of the rubber. For example, a 50 or 100W engraver will engrave the rubber deeper and faster than a 25W machine, which may require a second pass to achieve a similar result. Usually supplied in an A4 size sheet form, a good quality laser rubber is required for engraving stamp dies and must also have suitable compression strength and ink transfer properties.

To assist the engraving process, it is necessary to remove the excess dust which is constantly created by the laser cutting action with an efficient exhaust filtration system. As very few, if any, CO2 laser engraving machines were initially purpose built for engraving and cutting rubber, installing and maintaining an effective dust extraction system pays long term dividends. Mirrors, lenses and any exposed bearing surfaces should be cleaned thoroughly as part of a regular maintenance program. Any neglect in this area will be detrimental to overall trouble free laser operation, as the build up of dust and residue will affect running efficiency and the quality of the finished stamp die. Lasers are controlled directly from a computer, the software drivers supplied with lasers work with many graphic programs such as CorelDraw.

Approximate cost of a 25 watt Laser suitable for stamp making is $40,000

Advantages – Production is computer controlled, custom made stamps can be made easily

Disadvantages – High capital investment, maintenance costs and running will be much higher than vulcanizing or polymer methods of manufacture.

This is a small brief about the importance of the laser engraved rubber stamps

Laser-aided cutting has brought about a revolution in the manufacturing industries. These high-powered optical beams are used to cut through a variety of materials such as metal, wood, glass and plastic. The laser is directed at the required surface and moved around to cut the material in the desired shape. Laser cutting gives a finer finish to the end product as compared to conventional cutting methods.

A typical laser beam is about 1/5th of a millimeter in width and has an intensity of 1000 to 2000 watts. Most laser cutting machines are integrated into a CAD/CAM system that helps the user design the end product on a computer before implementing it on the work piece.

Laser cutting devices are proving beneficial in a wide array of industries. The plastic industry is no exception. These optic powered devices are used to cut precise shapes into plastic or acrylic sheets. The lasers can be used to cut plastics of varying thickness by simply altering the intensity of the beam. Lasers are not only used to cut through plastics but also help engrave on various surfaces.

Laser plastic cutting machines bring precision and accuracy to the entire process. Since most machines are fully automated, they can perform complex cutting operations at high-speeds. The laser plastic cutting machines can also be used to cut polymers, polycarbonates and other synthetic materials such as polyesters and rubbers.

The laser cutting method uses a non-contact approach when cutting the material. Due to this, the wear and tear associated with conventional methods is absent, preventing the product from any damage and deformation. The laser process also delivers a finish quality unmatched by any other process.

When using laser plastic cutting machines, care should be taken to avoid the use of flammable plastics such as PVCs. These materials cannot cope with the heat generated by the laser and get damaged easily.

1.- Starting with an idea on paper
2.- Transposed this sketch to Corel Draw
3.- Resulting output file is sent to the CO2 laser engraver for cutting.
4.- Two edge-lit 1/8 inch acrylic sheets were used for this project (32×20 inch). Each sheet takes over 30 minutes to cut out the various shapes.
5.- Assembly phase. The pieces are assembled onto a threaded rod on a acrylic base.

The completed tree is about 16 inches in height and 12 inches in diameter at the bottom. The edge-lit acrylic looks fantastic in sunlight, or lit by LED lights at night.
